Our plans went a LITTLE bit differently than planned. But that happens always in our house. We have learned to be flexible. When half of our group canceled we continued…just us.
We finished our BBC series that we’ve been watching on Netflix. An AMAZING series! I never knew that China was so beautiful. Today we watched episodes 5 and 6. We enjoyed the antics of the giant pandas and the beautiful owls in episode 6. But our favorite was the processing of oolong tea. I want to grow tea now!
As promised I took the kids to Panda Express for lunch. Not an easy task. Gabby has watched a few health documentaries and we were given an entire lecture on the way about how “toxic” the food was. I noticed she still ate it. :)
After lunch we enjoyed a small tradition: sharing our fortunes! This time I included an orange which is used in decorating because the words sound like luck.
Gabby shared that Dad told her they needed to get real fortunes. “Like, your cat will go missing in four days.” UM…that’s not a fortune. Silly Dad! Then it was time for the art project. We modified the directions slightly for our purposes.
- Strips of 1″ x 6″ scrapbook paper in gold & red
- 1 sheet of 12″ x 6″ white scrapbook paper
- Adhesive Roll Tape (We use Stampin’ Up! or Creative Memories (no longer available)
- Paint brushes
- A towel
We placed the strips on the top and bottom of the page using the tape adhesive. Each person decided the style and order of the strips.
We used red, grey, black, brown and green for our color palette. In the middle we would dip our brushes after dipping in paint. (If we wanted the water color look).
The style we chose was bamboo art with Chinese greetings for the New Year. Even I joined in on the fun. Using Google translate the kids were able to discover their “Chinese Character”.
Calvin chose Good Fortune. Bella chose Good Luck. And Gabby chose Have Faith. Momma just painted a picture.
We are sadly happy to be moving on from our study of China. Next we will learn about Japan. Our study of Asia has been rewarding and yummy!
