So, you know how I posted this on the 7th of October. We managed to get that week accomplished and then I became sick. Can’t get out of bed, can’t function, sick. When I finally was able to remove my body from it’s resting place it was time to make a trip. A trip to testify in a lawsuit. Not because I wanted to but because it was the right thing. Then it was our 20th anniversary. It seems like the month of October went flying by and all that was accomplished was Math and English for the girls. Calvin kept up with his studies. Sort of. The lab for his Physical Science required supplies we did not have. And adult supervision. Sigh.
So chalk October up to a month of blah!
It’s NOVEMBER. We’re now again on schedule. So, here’s what we are doing this week.
Lesson Plans for 11/4 – 11/8
The girls are continuing to work on completing their Teaching Textbooks. I am upping their lesson load. I do plan on going through and seeing what we can “skip” so we can get to the next grade. Some of this stuff is too easy for them!
The girls are continuing to read Proverbs daily and respond by drawing. We are using this awesome program by Notgrass.
We are starting week 1 of Africa in our Around The World study! What will we be doing? Mapping, reading about Africa, making African masks and listening to African music. I have shared our plans here.
We are starting week 2 of our Earth Science study. We will read pages 9-13 of our spine book. This week we are learning how minerals are grouped.
- Seven Groups of Minerals. We will watch a video by Geology Kitchen. We will also be starting on our interactive notebook using Rocks & Minerals lapbook.
- Physical Properties of Minerals. We will explore the true color of minerals by completing an experiment from the book. We will watch a video from Discovery Education.
- Economic Value of Minerals. This is where we will discuss their uncle’s job in the mining industry. We will also sort our collection of minerals by crystal structure.
- The last day we will review what we have learned. The girls will have scheduled time to play some games. We will also spend some time identifying our minerals using Mineralogy 4 Kids’ App.
We will be creating African masks from Geography Through Art.
We will watch this video by Family Bible Time. I will show the kids the notes on the piano. They will copy the 1st stanza.
We will be studying cattails that I picked from our local area last week. For inspiration we are reading Petra School’s entry from 2010.
Although both girls are enjoying their IEW and Wordsmith programs, I have decided to add another LA program. Both girls have goals that currently include college. I cannot wing this important skill.
Not wanting to buy ANOTHER expensive program, we found a great solution. And it’s free!
The girls will be completing MS LA 6th and 7th Grade from Georgia Virtual Learning. Unfortunately they will not have the “discussion” portions. However, I have scheduled videos for them to watch when appropriate. I will let them both continue their writing programs.
The girls will also continue fine-tuning their handwriting. It’s an area that I let slide. But after 4 years, I can no longer ignore the problem. Their handwriting is WAY below their grade level. We are using worksheets I have created. Using copywork from our Geography and Bible. I have also started making them erase and re-do. My hope is by the end of this year their handwriting will be legible.
All three kids are using Spelling Power 2 days a week.
They also have logic books that they use for free time.
I’m hoping that we don’t have too much “free time” during our school hours. If we do the girls will be free to play games. This week their choice is Funglish or Smath. I’m hoping to start teaching them how to play Scrabble also.
I have also decided to start working on my vast amount of puzzles. This will be available for them to work on whenever they want. I found that if I start working on it, they will join me.
This week we have a few activities. Bella has her team gymnastic practice 2 hours on Wes & Fri. Gabby has a riding lesson on Wes. Calvin has Karate every day. We also have Café Hop on Tuesday. This is our monthly social outing with a local homeschool group. It means a chance for the kids to hang, a bowl of yummy yogurt and 2 hours of mom time. (The kids walk down to Powell’s and hang out…). Momma’s bible study will be at our house this week, so Wednesday will be clean the house day. Did I mention that Wednesdays are C-R-A-Z-Y? Good thing that we have the entire day to finish our schooling.
What fun things will you be doing this week?
