This year I have TWO in Middle School. It’s a little bittersweet. I do love how the girls are developing their own interests…but I miss the wonder of the elementary years.
Goal for the Year
Our goal for the girls this year is to transition toward independent learning. This is one of the reasons we have chosen our math curriculum. Another goal is for both girls to gain confidence in writing an essay.
Chosen Learning Resources
Gabby & Bella will be using Teaching Textbooks this year. We plan to continue through their entire school years with this program. The girls will work on their math Monday-Thursday. On Friday we will working through Family Math (Equals Series).
Gabby loves IEW. She will be completing the Student Writing Intensive course independently. I’m TRYING to convince Bella that she’d like the program. I believe Bella is going to continue with Wordsmith Apprentice.
We have been reviewing The Logic of English program for The Schoolhouse Crew. The girls will be continuing until this is completed. Once we are done with this program, we will return to using Spelling Power for spelling. We are taking a break from Grammar this year. (We’re a little burned out after 3 years of Easy Grammar).
The rest of our school will be relaxed using the Charlotte Mason philosophy as our basis. Charlotte Mason is a method of education where children are taught as whole beings. Education comes from interesting books (AKA Living Books), hands-on experiences and consistent character habits. Visit Simply Charlotte Mason.com for more information.
Our focus this year is World Geography and Earth Science. This will be the focus of our learning this year. I am creating our curriculum as we go along this year. It will be called Around the World. I hope to be able to share it with you when it’s completed!
As the curriculum is based upon living books that we will be borrowing from our library, I will not be showing all the books we will be using.
World Geography & Earth Science
Using Mr. Brown’s page for inspiration, we will begin with a unit on the basics of Geography. From there we will move from continent to continent, ending with North America when we will cover Civil War to Modern US History & a review of US Geography.
Our Geography spine is Encyclopedia of World Geography – Internet Linked (Reduced Format)
Our Science spine is Earth Science Made Simple: A Clear Introduction to the Science of Our Planet.
Family Enrichment Subjects
We will be studying the life of Jesus using Foundations Press Christ our Messiah Curriculum. The girls will continue using Notgrass Draw-to-Learn The Life of Jesus.
This year I plan to step-up our Nature Study. We will be completing the Outdoor Hour Challenges by Barb. Trips to the park. Trips to the beach. Research and preparation for a garden. Chickens. Astronomy.
Shakespeare for Kids
So much to do…so little time to do it. I’m going to let the girls interests lead in this area. I know we want to read Romeo and Juliet together. I will try to incorporate these areas into our Geography/Science learning as much as possible. I do not plan to make these “formal” yet because I don’t believe the girls are ready.
This year we will be focusing on Modesty with the girls. The plan is to approach it from the perspective of temperance and not legalistic directive.
Both girls will be completing Life Lessons from the Princess and the Kiss (Revive Our Hearts) study with a princess ceremony planned at the end of the term.
We will be helping Bella learn to manage her temper (and anxiety). Using What to Do When Your Temper Flares: A Kid’s Guide to Overcoming Problems With Anger (What to Do Guides for Kids)we hope to give her the tools that will help her navigate the teen years successfully.
The girls will continue pursuing their interests.
Bella hopes to graduate to the competition level in gymnastics. She will also be riding at Gabby’s barn once a month. She’s also requested to learn the violin.
Gabby will continue her riding. She’s working on mastering Western style. She hopes to volunteer with an equine-therapy barn as well as *MAYBE* joining a 4-H horse club. She wants to join the swim team also, but recognizing she could not commit to both, she’s decided to focus on her horses. We are looking into finding a piano teacher for her.
