We reached Portland, Maine. What a disappointment. It wasn’t the quaint coastal town I imagined. In fact, it was another ugly and dirty town. I guess perhaps it was because we are absolutely tired of traveling. Tired of issues with technology, the trailer and the animals. Just plain tired.
We are heading home on Monday. We’ll be heading west with our final destination being Portland, Oregon. Home. A place that we have missed. Yes, even the rain.
We have driven through 23 states so far. We’ve seen the Grand Tetons, Washington DC and the US Space Center. We’ve gone through at least 3 severe thunderstorms and 1 tornado watch. We’ve visited friends and met new friends. We have a practically new engine in our Ford truck and a broken grey tank in our Heartland fifth wheel.
We’ve made memories. We’ve laughed. Learned. Explored.
And we are ready for home.
We’ve lived our dream. It’s just not in the cards for us to sell everything and become a full-time family on the road.
And finally, I’m ok with that.
Our son is ready to make the finally journey into adulthood. He needs us to not be gallivanting across the country. He needs to be in a stable place where he can get the skills he needs for his chosen career path. We have always tried to do what’s best for our children. Now is the time to put down our roots again and prepare them for the future.
It doesn’t mean we’ll quit traveling. We do enjoy RVing. Besides, I love to spend time at the Oregon Coast and it’s cheaper in an RV.
We will probably get something smaller so we can go into state parks. There’s still places left to see. The Northwest is an amazing place to vacation.
We’ve seen the US (well minus a few states). We’ve experienced what we wanted to experience.
Now’s time for a new adventure.
