On a sunny Friday afternoon we explored the wonder of Boise. This trip took us to the Morrison-Knudsen Nature Center. This 4.6 acre site offers a glimpse into the wild diversity of Idaho. It is located at 600 South Walnut adjacent to the Boise River Greenbelt.
When we first arrived I was surprised by the center’s resident population. Not everyday you see this in a parking lot!
The MK center has free admission; donations are appreciated. They do have a visitor center/gift shop with educational exhibits for children (and adults) to learn more about the wildlife and habitat displayed along the nature trail.
The main feature of the center is the StreamWalk. This walk features 18 unique exhibits for exploring and education.
One of our favorite exhibits was the Beaver Dam. Although we did not see the beaver, we did enjoy seeing a natural engineering wonder. Adjacent to the dam is the small pond. There is a large deck overlook where we were able to enjoy the trout, sturgeon and ducks.
It’s not easy to take a photography of a big moving fish underwater. Trust me, it’s AWESOME to see a sturgeon swimming freely.
Ducks. Everywhere it seems there are ducks. I loved visiting the duck pond as a child and feeding them. (Not ok now…although people still do it). I especially loved it when there were babies. This time there was just these beautiful male ducks. Dipping, swimming and preening.
In the middle of the pond there was a floating deck of trees. In the middle were these ducks that I had never seen before!
After research, I believe this duck to be a Wood Duck.
My daughter took over the camera and we ended up with a few pictures of fish. This was the best one. Rainbow Trout. Idaho at its best.
We decided to take a walk along the Boise River Greenbelt. There was an exit from the center directly to the walk.
This day was interesting because it was the day of the annual Mustache Bike Ride. There were many
strange interestingly dressed people riding along the trail. I was nice and didn’t take pictures.
At one point we met up with another friend…
Isn’t she beautiful?
If you visit Boise, Idaho I definitely recommend a visit to the MK Center and the Boise River Greenbelt!
