I love how my life has been blessed with the small and simple things. I’m really a simple girl. Easy to please. Really, I find pleasure in something as simple as a flower pushing it’s way through the grass, saying hello.
So, one of my most favorite moments is when Betty lets me know that she laid an egg. Betty is a young Buckeye hen. She typically ignores me. However, she’s lately started to come running the minute I open the door. (I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that I make them warm oatmeal?). So, while typing I heard this LOUD squawking. I opened the door. Sure enough, she came running at me, feathers flying, beak flapping. Usually it’s Yuki (the Silky) who talks at me. She tells me EVERYTHING that happens in the hen house and I pretend I understand just exactly what she’s saying.
Anyway, back to Betty. So I say to her, “Did you lay an egg?” She’s hopping around like a crazy bird; I’d take that as yes. I put my big blue rubber boots on and schlep out to the hen house. Inside I found not ONE, but TWO eggs. Apparently Betty was willing to claim her egg and her sister’s egg! Silly bird.
With eggs in hand, I headed back to the door where Betty is proudly standing looking at me. I tell her “Thank you for your gift.” She takes off toward the garden in search of Yuki and Clarabelle (The Buff Orpington). I swear this chicken thinks I understand her.
Honestly, I’m happy that my birds are happy. All three are laying now. (Clara lays about 3:00 on the dot every day). I’m happy for the little song and dance they give every time they lay an egg. I’m just happy for these simple little moments in life that make me blessed.
That’s it for today.
