We have moved from the cute stage to the ugly stage to the “we are the chickens” stage. No eggs yet. But they have developed personalities and eat a lot. They are fancy pets for now.
Samantha has a birth defect known as cross-beak. I expected her to not survive, however, survive she has. I have to feed her crumbles moistened in a deep dish twice a day. She is not going to be as big as she could be…but she’s living. And she is actually quite sweet. She runs to me the minute I go into the backyard. Between her and my cat Max, I have plenty of moments where I’m tripping over animals!
We discovered that Alex was a rooster. So, he went to live with our friends in the country and we inherited a Buff Orpington hen we call “Snickers”. Although, I prefer my MIL’s name for her: Clara. Either way, she’s a bossy thing and doesn’t quite like us. And of course. No eggs. Sam’s sister Betty is doing just fine. She doesn’t like me either.
Apparently the chickens do not appreciate my fascination for them. Silly birds.
The Hotel chicken is pretty much done. We have to paint it still and I need to fix a few little things inside…but it’s done. An expensive project for 3 birds who would rather run around the yard than hang out in their own place.
That’s the update for now. I can’t wait until I can post my first egg picture!
