My Brother-in-law is amazing at designing & creating things for me whenever I get a wild idea…like raising chickens. So, today he arrived with wood, my sister and baby nephew in tow. The girls went shopping (I have a new grill!!!) and the boys stayed to build. This is what it looked like early afternoon.
The coop is 4×6 and the posts are cemented into the ground. It will be finished with lap siding and shingled roof to match our house. Our house will be painted this summer and the coop will be painted at the same time.
The front will have a door & window. To the left will be two or three nest boxes. The door for them to go outside will be to the right. We will leave underneath open for them to hide under. The entire run will be enclosed with hardware cloth.
View of the chicken area from my back patio. We chose to keep the lilac in the corner. I’m hoping eventually it will grow tall enough to tower over the coop…or at least enough to help keep the smell of chickens down!
Framing in the window. We decided to put a sliding window with a screen. There will also be a vent in the roof.
My stepdad helping to place the window. This is basically how it looks at the end of today. Tuesday we will be finishing up the side boards and hopefully get the run framed. It’s ok, because the babies can’t go out yet.
It’s going to be a fun summer!
