I found myself quoting Proverbs 31: 10 last week:
Who[b] can find a virtuous[c] wife? For her worth is far above rubies.
As I read the scripture, I had ventured along a well-known path: the path of “Not Doing Enough”. Ah yes, I’ve been there many times.
If I was a better Christian, I’d being doing more.
If I was a better wife, I’d be doing more.
If I was a better mother, I’d be doing more.
If I was a better woman, I’d be doing more.
How many times must a person choose a path before they realize it leads to a dead end? I apparently am slow to learn.
Some women are encouraged by this scripture. After all, who doesn’t want to be a wife worth FAR above rubies?
The problem with the Proverbs 31 woman is that she’s like Barbie. Unrealistic. I don’t believe it’s meant to be one woman.**
What woman can physically be all these things in a 24 hour day? (without the use of some heavy-duty medication!):
- Gourmet Cook
- Vineyard Keeper
- Real Estate Buyer
- Exercise Queen
- 24/7 Worker Bee (She Rises Early, Her Lamp does not Go Out at Night)
- Charity Worker
- Tapestry Maker
- Wife of an Elder
- Linen Maker
- Linen Seller
Need I go on? The truth is that YES, a woman can do all those things, if she puts her mind to it. The question is, AT WHAT COST?
Yes, it is good that I be the best wife and mother possible. However, I was not meant to be superwomen. Christ holds the weight of the world on his shoulders; NOT ME.
So, when it’s 2pm and I’m still in my pajamas, I’m not going to beat myself up because I’m not wearing linen and purple.
My husband may not be known in the gates, but he knows me.
My children may not called me blessed, but they know that I am there when they need me.
I’m going to rejoice that I’m at home with my children, right where God called me to be.
THAT’S who a Proverbs 31 woman truly is.

** I believe the passage in Proverbs 31 is not about an actual woman, but about the church, Jesus’ representation on earth. I hope to share my thoughts more about this in the future.
